Flames Rumors: What Return Will Calgary Get In Rasmus Andersson Trade?

Rasmus Andersson is positioned as one of the Calgary Flames' most valuable trade assets, particularly as they navigate a rebuild. 

At 27 years old, Andersson is a reliable top-four defenseman with the potential to be a low-end top-pairing right-shot blueliner on a contending team. 

His contract, which carries a reasonable $4.55 million AAV through the 2025-26 season, makes him an attractive target for teams seeking to solidify their defense without straining their cap space. 

However, with the Flames' defense weakened by the departures of key players like Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, and Nikita Zadorov, Andersson's importance to Calgary has increased, complicating the decision to trade him.

According to Julian McKenzie of The Athletic, the return for Andersson would need to be substantial for the Flames to consider parting with him. 

Given his contract status and the demand for right-shot defensemen, Calgary could likely command a package that includes a high draft pick and a top-tier prospect. 

This aligns with the Flames' strategy to accumulate assets that will aid their long-term rebuild. If Andersson's performance this season shows improvement from his somewhat down 2023-24 campaign, his trade value could peak, potentially driving up the price for his services as the trade deadline approaches.

Despite the potential return, the Flames are in no rush to move Andersson. 

His modified no-trade clause, which allows him to block trades to six teams, could also influence trade discussions. Ultimately, the decision to trade Andersson will hinge on whether Calgary receives an offer that significantly enhances their rebuilding efforts, and makes losing such a valuable piece of their team worthwhile.
