Flames Rumors: Will Calgary Shop Andrei Kuzmenko?

Speculation is mounting about whether the Calgary Flames might consider shopping winger Andrei Kuzmenko, according to Jim Parsons of The Hockey News.

After a remarkable NHL debut with the Vancouver Canucks in 2022-23, where Kuzmenko recorded 39 goals and 74 points, his performance took a downturn the following season, leading to his trade to Calgary for Elias Lindholm.

While Kuzmenko quickly regained his scoring touch with the Flames, notching 14 goals and 25 points in 29 games, questions about his defensive play and overall consistency have persisted.

Kuzmenko's contract situation further fuels the uncertainty.

Entering the final season of a two-year deal with a $5.5 million AAV, the 28-year-old winger needs to prove he can sustain his offensive output while improving his defensive game to secure a long-term extension.

The Flames have shown more patience with Kuzmenko than the Canucks, but with the team in a retooling phase, his future in Calgary is far from guaranteed, as noted by Parsons.

If Kuzmenko continues to struggle defensively or if his scoring diminishes, Parsons thinks the Flames could view him as a valuable trade asset, particularly as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches.

A strong season could solidify his place in Calgary's plans, but ongoing inconsistencies might prompt the Flames to explore trading him for other assets that align more closely with their long-term vision.
