There were fears about Fast's availability for the coming year ever since he suffered a season-ending neck injury in the Hurricanes’ regular-season finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was out for the entire playoffs.
The 11-year veteran has always been a solid contributor in the bottom six, though his offense took a dip last season, with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 73 games. He added 79 hits, and played 12:36 per night.
Fast was originally a sixth-round pick of the New York Rangers, 157th overall, in the 2010 NHL Draft. In 703 career games, the 32-year-old has 91 goals and 157 assists for 248 points. He spent his first seven years in the league with the Blueshirts, and the last four in Raleigh.
