Hurricanes Sign Seth Jarvis To Massive Extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed RFA Seth Jarvis to an eight-year deal for $63.2 million ($7.9 million AAV). This should complete their offseason as he was the final RFA at the NHL level to take care of.

The Hurricanes desperately needed this signing to get done as the team lost a lot of good talent over the offseason. Jarvis was a great piece for Carolina last season as the 22-year-old broke out for 33 goals and 67 points. He will continue to play on the top line and first power-play unit and the talented young winger is only going to get better from here. He realistically isn't even in his prime yet.

This puts the Hurricanes a little over the salary cap for this coming season with a full roster, so the team may have to start with just one extra on the team, staying below the 21-man roster limit unless there is an injury. After this season, money will open up for them and things will become a little easier.

Jarvis has already played three seasons in the NHL, recording 64 goals and 146 points in 231 games. He has jumped significantly in ice time each season and finished 8th in Selke Trophy voting and 20th in Lady Byng Memorial Trophy voting last season.

While he may be small (5 '10, 175 lbs), Jarvis doesn't shy away from playing a gritty and physical game, already recording 257 hits and 121 career blocked shots. Interestingly enough, Jarvis made such an impact early that he only played nine total games in the AHL and will not be back.

Over the course of the three seasons he's spent in the NHL, his goals % is stellar and the Hurricanes are banking on Jarvis being an integral part of the team and any success for many years to come. He is likely going to continue to get better and grow into a leadership role.
