NHL Trade Rumors: 3 Goalies Linked to 2024-25 Trade Market
The 2024 NHL offseason has been one of the busiest in league history, including a ton of movement among goalies. From starting netminders to Vezina trophy winners, this summer has seen it all within the crease.
Look for the goaltending movement to continue heading into next season. There's a few goalies to keep on the trade radar as there's a few prime candidates who could potentially be moved during the 2024-25 season:
Tristan Jarry
There was a ton of speculation out of Pittsburgh this summer that Kyle Dubas made Jarry available in trade talks, however to this point, he'll remain a Pen. Jarry is expected to be Pittsburgh's starter next season, but after a down year, which included losing his starter's job to Alex Nedeljkovic, Jarry will be under the spotlight in 2024-25. He has a $5.3 million cap hit until the 2028-29 season and holds a 12-team modified no-trade clause. There was some chatter about a deal with the LA Kings, but Rob Blake went another direction.
Elvis Merzlikins
Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell admitted he'd like to move Merzlikins but his contract is making it near impossible. The 30-year-old goaltender has three seasons left on his deal at $5.4 million. Merzlikins holds a 10-team no-trade clause and has asked for a trade in the past. He'll likely be Columbus' starter to start next season, but if things go south, look for Waddell to be open to retaining some salary to facilitate a trade. Merzlikins posted a 13-17-8 record last season and is hopeful he'll bounce back in 24-25.
Yaroslav Askarov
When the Predators re-signed Juuse Saros to a long-term deal, Askarov took to social media to send out a cryptic message about being unhappy in Nashville. Askarov doesn't want to go back to the AHL bus riding and has been lights out the past two seasons, hopeful to land an NHL job come September. Barry Trotz brought in Scott Wedgewood to backup Saros, so as of right now, that's the plan from the team. This will be something to monitor once Askarov reports to training camp as there could be a flat out trade request coming. The market will be huge as he's one of the best young goaltending prospects of the past two decades.
