NHL Trade Rumors: Insider Proposes Trade Oilers Should Make With Flames

Insider Bob Stauffer has proposed a bold trade that the Edmonton Oilers should pursue with the Calgary Flames, particularly if they choose not to match the offer sheet for defenseman Philip Broberg from the St. Louis Blues.

On his show Oilers Now, Stauffer, known for his close connections with the Oilers, suggested that Edmonton target Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson as an upgrade to their blue line.

Andersson, a right-shot defenseman with two years remaining on a team-friendly $4.55 million per season contract, could be a valuable addition to the Oilers' defense corps, potentially forming a solid pairing with Darnell Nurse.

Stauffer proposed that the Oilers could offer Calgary a package that might include defenseman Brett Kulak or Cody Ceci, a first-round pick, and the second-round pick Edmonton would receive as compensation for losing Broberg.

While the Flames have had a relatively quiet offseason and are not actively looking to make significant moves, Stauffer argued that such an offer could be tempting for Calgary, particularly as they consider their long-term strategy.

The draft capital and roster pieces offered by Edmonton might provide the Flames with an opportunity to rebuild and retool their roster.

However, Stauffer acknowledged the challenges in convincing Calgary to trade with a provincial rival, a sentiment echoed by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman noted the skepticism surrounding the Flames' willingness to part with a key player like Andersson, especially to a direct competitor. Yet, he conceded that if the Oilers were to present an offer too good to refuse, it might force Calgary to reconsider their stance.
