NHL Trade Rumors: Will The Canadiens Make A Move For A Goalie?

Marc Dumont of Montreal Hockey Now recently speculated on whether the Montreal Canadiens might consider making a move for a goaltender, given their current depth and the potential availability of Nashville Predators' prospect Yaroslav Askarov.

Askarov, who was drafted 11th overall in 2020, has reportedly requested a trade due to limited opportunities behind Juuse Saros, who recently signed a long-term extension.

Despite Askarov's pedigree as a highly-touted prospect, Dumont suggests that the Canadiens are unlikely to pursue him, given their existing goaltending depth and the uncertainties surrounding Askarov's immediate NHL readiness.

The Canadiens appear well-positioned in net with Samuel Montembeault as their starter and Cayden Primeau as a reliable backup, both of whom delivered solid performances last season despite the challenges of a young, evolving defense.

Additionally, Montreal has an elite prospect in Jacob Fowler, who is currently developing in the NCAA and is expected to compete for the starting job within the next few years.

This depth in the goaltending pipeline suggests that acquiring another goalie, particularly one like Askarov who might require an immediate NHL role, may not align with the Canadiens' current strategy.

Dumont argues that Montreal’s focus remains on nurturing their young talent across the roster rather than taking a risk on a goaltender with uncertainties.

With a steady pipeline of goalies and no pressing need in net, the Canadiens are more likely to continue addressing other areas as they rebuild.
