Oilers' Defenseman Could Be Traded To Sharks After Multiple Offer Sheets By Blues

With the Edmonton Oilers having to deal with two offer sheets within seven days for their former first-round picks, it puts a lot of pressure on them to make a move. The most obvious trade will come on defense where Cody Ceci and Brett Kulak are both possibilities to move.

In terms of effectiveness and what a trade would accomplish, Ceci has just one year left on a $3.25 million AAV deal and Kulak has two years left at $2.75 million AAV.

Sheng Peng suggested that the San Jose Sharks could be the team that acquires Ceci and take advantage of the situation in Edmonton. The Sharks have the cap space and did make offseason moves to improve a very poor looking roster from last season. Not only that, but the right side of the Sharks' defense is the weakest in the league with Ty Emberson, Jan Rutta, and Marc-Andre Vlasic expected to slot in there.

Peng said that the Sharks could receive a draft pick for taking on Ceci or even Kulak. Considering Kulak has been more effective than Ceci, has one more year on his deal, and has a cap hit of $500,000 less, it would make the most sense if the Oilers parted with Ceci in this instance, even if it cost a little more. The pairing of Darnell Nurse and Ceci has gone on long enough and really hurt the Oilers come playoff time.

I expect a few more days of figuring things out for the Oilers, but a move is going to be made so that the team can match the offer sheets on their young players from the St. Louis Blues.
