Oilers Looking To Sign Defensemen To PTOs: Tyson Barrie In Mix

The Edmonton Oilers have been a busy team this summer, especially as of late. Over the last few days the Oilers have traded Cody Ceci, acquired Ty Emberson, and didn't match the offer sheet for Philip Broberg by the St. Louis Blues.

The right side of the Oilers' defense looks much weaker and there are definitely spots up for grabs as Emberson, Troy Stecher, and Josh Brown will be the main culprits to see in the lineup as of now. This has led to discussion that Edmonton is going to be signing at least one defenseman to a PTO. The most likely player being Tyson Barrie.

Dustin Nielson reported that the Oilers are keeping their options open in regards to PTOs, but the team has already had discussions with Barrie. He is loved in the room, but it remains to be seen if he fits in on the blueline how the team is currently built. Maybe Kris Knoblauch and the new system the Oilers have in place defensively changes things. Barrie didn't have Knoblauch as a head coach in Edmonton and Brett Kulak got the best out of Barrie during their time together on the third pairing.

Bob Stauffer also noted that the Oilers will likely add a defenseman on a PTO and said that it could be a player that Knoblauch has familiarity with and has spent a bit of time in the NHL with over the past few years. Barrie seems like he will at least be signed to a PTO, but I wouldn't be surprised if another wildcard is added to the mix. The Oilers need competition and to get the best out of the players playing below Evan Bouchard on the right side.
