Rangers Rumors: Kaapo Kakko Has Become "Buy-Low" Candidate For Teams

As the 2024-25 NHL season approaches, the future of Kaapo Kakko with the New York Rangers remains in question.

Despite signing a one-year, $2.4 million contract at the beginning of the offseason, trade interest in Kakko has been minimal.

According to Arthur Staple of The Athletic, the 23-year-old winger is not highly coveted by other teams, making him a "buy-low" candidate.

This perception has left Rangers GM Chris Drury with little incentive to move Kakko, as the offers received have not been worthwhile.

Kakko's recent performance has contributed to his diminished trade value.

Coming off a disappointing 2023-24 season where he recorded just 19 points (6 goals, 13 assists) in 61 games, Kakko has struggled to consistently seize opportunities, often due to injuries and inconsistent play.

Teams are hesitant to offer substantial returns for the former first-round pick, leading to a cold trade market for him.

Consequently, it seems prudent for the Rangers to retain Kakko in hopes that he can rebound and fulfill his potential, rather than trading him for minimal value.

This season may be Kakko's final chance to prove himself with the Rangers.

Despite his struggles, the team still sees potential in him, particularly in a bottom-six role where his defensive capabilities could be an asset.

If Kakko can improve his performance, it might boost his trade value or solidify his place in New York. However, if he fails to make a significant impact, his tenure with the Rangers might come to an end after this season.
