Rangers Rumors : Would Igor Shesterkin Accept A "Hometown" Discount?

Peter Baugh of The Athletic recently discussed the speculation surrounding New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin and the possibility of him taking a "hometown discount" to help the team manage its salary cap situation.

With key players like Alexis Lafreniere and K'Andre Miller set to become restricted free agents next summer, the Rangers face a lot of financial challenges.

Baugh referenced his colleague Arthur Staple, who suggested that Shesterkin's starting point in negotiations could be around 14 percent of the salary cap, roughly $12.94 million annually.

Given Shesterkin's elite status among NHL goaltenders, it's difficult to envision him accepting a significantly lower salary.

This contract represents Shesterkin's prime opportunity to maximize his earnings as an unrestricted free agent.

Baugh emphasized that if the Rangers are hesitant to meet Shesterkin's financial demands, other teams on the open market would likely offer him top dollar, highlighting how difficult it is to come by top-tier goalie talent.

Last season, the 28-year-old recorded a .912 SV%, 2.58 GAA, four shutouts, and a 36-17-2 record across 55 games played.

Over his five-year NHL career, Shesterkin holds a .921 SV%, 2.43 GAA, 15 shutouts, and a 135-59-17 record across 213 games played.
