Report: Broberg Getting 250% More Than His Oilers Asking Price

Even Philip Broberg himself couldn't have imagined the windfall he just stumbled into from the offer sheet the St. Louis Blues handed him this week.

According to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, the restricted free agent, without a lot of NHL play on his resume, was asking the Edmonton Oilers for such a modest amount in his contract negotiations, that the money on the Blues' offer sheet will give him 250% more than his Oilers' asking price:

I had heard that Broberg was asking from Edmonton a salary in the $1.8 million range. That's kind of where he wanted to go. So, if that's true... the Blues just gave him 250% more than he was asking for.

The Blues' offer sheet for the young defenseman is for two years, with a $4.6 million AAV. That's a $2.8 million raise over what he was hoping for, over two years, which is a total of a $5.6 million windfall.

Dylan Holloway got himself quite the bonus as well, as his two-year, $2.29 million offer sheet was for about 100% more than he was asking out of Edmonton.

Assuming it was a one year deal (the Oilers were discussing with Holloway), it was expected to be in the $1.2 million area, so he got almost 100% more than he was expecting. So these are massive raises, kind of poison pills, if you wish, that the Blues have given the Oilers.

Friedman added that the feeling around the Blues was that these offer sheets wouldn't have worked with only one of the Oilers' players. "They had to sign both of them. That was the only way that this was going to work for St. Louis."

With only six days remaining until the deadline to match the offer sheets, time is now running on the Oilers to figure out how they're going to reshuffle the deck chairs to try to make these contracts work. They are over the cap, and the $5M they'll get to work with from the Evander Kane impending LTIR stint won't cover both of these deals.
