Sidney Crosby Signing Could Be Imminent, Per Numerous Sources

Everyone in the City of Bridges is awaiting news on the re-signing of Pittsburgh Penguins living legend Sidney Crosby. He's entering the final year of his contract and is extension-eligible. According to numerous sources within the Pittsburgh hockey community, a long-awaited signing announcement could  be made on Wednesday.

Here's why:

Crosby doesn't wear #87 for nothing. And his AAV of $8.7 million isn't a coincidence either. Everyone knows that he's superstitious about the number. He was born on August 7th, 1987. That's 8/7/87. Wednesday just happens to be August 7th. Sounds like a good day to re-sign.

Penguins insider Mark Madden said on his most recent podcast that he believes that's when the captain should sign the extension. “If he doesn’t, I think we can start wondering,” Madden said. “If he’s not signed, this is something that drags on all year. It’s gonna drive him crazy, so he will sign the contract, just to avoid that."

Then Madden, who never shies away from stirring up the pot, suggested, “Honestly, if he doesn’t sign the contract, they should trade him this year.”

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette agrees that Wednesday should be the day:

This all should come down to Wednesday — or Aug. 7, for anyone like me who can quote movies from 20 years ago but struggles to remember dates. That’s also, as we all know, Crosby’s birthday.

The whole thing would be perfect, wouldn’t it?

But like Madden, Mackey will also start get worried if it doesn't happen on that day.

"If this is the most recent Crosby column you’ve read by Thursday morning, we might have problems," Mackey wrote this week. "If the lag is because there’s some sort of hiccup, well, that’s a much bigger and worrisome discussion."

For now, nothing to worry about.

But let's revisit this later in the week.

As for Crosby, turning 37 on Wednesday, one of the game's all-time greats certainly doesn't seem like he's on any kind of decline, as he recorded 42 goals and 94 points this past season, his second straight year playing in all 82 games. Slowing down? Not so much.
