Silence Around Crosby Talks “Worrisome”

Not to send Pittsburgh Penguins fans into a panic, but we're now two weeks past the date that almost everyone expected Sidney Crosby would sign his new extension. August 7th (8/7) has come and gone for #87, (who was born on 8/7/87), and there's nary a word coming out of the front office about what's up with the franchise legend's contract. Crosby is going into the final season of his 12-year deal.

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette thinks there is a "weird amount of silence surrounding the whole Crosby situation."

After opining about the unlikelihood of a long Penguins postseason run this coming year, he turned his attention to what's really got him concerned:

The Crosby situation is far more worrisome. Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas was busy this past week flipping non-descriptive draft picks with the (St. Louis) Blues. Have to think there was available time to extend one of the most important athletes in our city's history.

Mackey then goes on to describe how unfathomable it is that Crosby says to Dubas, 'ok, let's get this done," and somehow it doesn't get done. Or even, from the Penguins perspective, if they tell the captain they're ready to do the extension, but he says, 'nah, not right now.'

The longer this goes, the more it worries me that one side doesn't want to dance. It's just hard to decipher which one that would be.

There's still a month to go before training camp. Maybe Crosby is out enjoying his summer and doesn't want to deal with business stuff. Maybe the Penguins are busy figuring out the many other aspects of their roster and what goes into this season.

Or, maybe, just maybe, as Mackey says, the whole thing is starting to get "worrisome."

Crosby, now 37, did not seem to be slowed by Father Time whatsoever last season, as he notched a 42 goal season with 94 points while playing 20 minutes a night.

2024-25 will be his 20th season.
