Stars Rumors: Dallas Could Use Familiar Method To Sign Thomas Harley

According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, the Dallas Stars are considering signing budding star defenseman Thomas Harley to a bridge contract, a strategy GM Jim Nill has previously employed with success.

Harley, 22, showed significant promise during his first full NHL season, contributing to the Stars' push towards the Western Conference final.

With a current salary cap hit of $863,333 and no arbitration rights, Harley lacks the leverage of some of his peers but has demonstrated enough potential to warrant a strategic bridge deal.

Nill's approach to developing and retaining young talent is evident in his past dealings with players like winger Jason Robertson and defenseman John Klingberg.

Harley's offensive prowess and growth make him a valuable asset for the Stars, who already have veteran defensemen Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell under contract for the 2024-25 season.

The team has further bolstered their defense by adding Matt Dumba and Ilya Lyubushkin, replacing departing veterans Ryan Suter and Chris Tanev.

A bridge deal for Harley would allow the Stars to manage their salary cap effectively while capitalizing on his potential, aligning with Nill’s proven strategy of bridging breakout RFAs to balance immediate cap concerns.

Last season, the 22-year-old recorded 15 goals, 47 total points, a +28 plus/minus rating, 135 blocked shots, and 67 hits across 79 games played.
