TRADE: Sharks Acquire Cody Ceci from Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are staying busy, as they have traded defenseman Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Ty Emberson.

This move is certainly notable for the Oilers, as they have moved Ceci's hefty $3.25 million cap hit. With this, it will undoubtedly help their chances of matching one of the offer sheets signed by Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. When noting that they have traded a defender in Ceci and added a forward in Vasily Podkolzin, it seems possible that they could retain Broberg and let Holloway go to the St. Louis Blues.

Ceci, 30, appeared in 79 games this past season with the Oilers, where he posted five goals to go along with 25 points and a plus-12 rating. During the playoffs with the Oilers, Ceci had two goals to go along with five points and a minus-5 rating.

As for Emberson, the Oilers have added a young defenseman to their depth. In 30 games this past season with the Sharks, Emberson had one goal, 10 points, 94 hits, and a minus-4 rating. Overall, the Eau Claire, Wisconsin native should fill in nicely as the club's seventh defenseman, as the 6-foot-1 defender plays a heavy game.

Overall, this is a good move for the Sharks, as they have added a solid veteran in Ceci and landed a draft pick for doing the Oilers a solid for taking on his cap hit. It will be interesting to see how Ceci performs in San Jose and what the Oilers do with their added cap space from here.
