UFA Goaltender Magnus Hellberg Signs With Western Contender

It's a big addition, at least by size. 6'6" goaltender Magnus Hellberg only played three games in the NHL last season, and only 26 total in his career since being drafted in the second round in 2011, but he will now join a contending organization as a depth piece between the pipes, signing a one-year, two-way deal with the Dallas Stars.

22-year-old Remi Poirier will likely still get a good portion of starts for the team's AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, but as a 33-year-old, Hellberg will add a solid veteran partner for Poirier to help him develop.

In 27 AHL regular-season games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Charlotte Checkers last season, he had a 2.92 GAA and .905 SV% in 19 games with the Penguins affiliate, as well as three games at the NHL level in which he posted a solid .922 Sv%, and he posted a 2.34 GAA and .898 SV% in eight games with Charlotte.

Overall, his AHL numbers in 218 games are impressive, with a 100-83-17 mark and a 2.52 GAA, .913 SV% and 15 shutouts.

Hellberg was a second-round pick by the Nashville Predators in the 2011 NHL Draft, but after getting only four looks at an NHL crease over four years, he left for the KHL for five seasons where he got regular starters' work and posted very solid numbers there as well, including save percentages well over the .920 mark and GAAs of under 2.00.
