14-Year Veteran Thomas Greiss Comes Out Of Retirement

He hasn't played a game since retiring at the end of the 2022-23 season, but 38-year-old goaltender Thomas Greiss, following a year off after a 14-year NHL career, has been convinced by a team in his German hometown to come out of retirement on an emergency basis.

With the Lowen Frankfurt Lions facing injuries to both of their top goaltenders, Jussi Olkinuora and Cody Brenner, they reached out on Tuesday to Greiss in St. Louis, where he last played in the NHL, and he immediately agreed to sign on as an emergency replacement between the pipes for the team.

"He will be with us for the time when Cody and Jussi are not available, and will bring his many years of experience and qualities as a top goalkeeper. In the current situation, this is the ideal solution for us, as he is not entitled to a contract until the end of the season," said the Lions' sporting director Daniel Heinrizi.

Greiss was born in Füssen, Germany, and was only too happy to oblige his hometown team and return to the German league where he began his career from 2003 to 2006. He should be available for this weekend's games.

In 368 games in the NHL, with the San Jose Sharks, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues, he recorded a 162-130-37 record, a 2.77 goals against average and a .911 save percentage.
