3 Potential Destinations for Free-Agent RHD Kevin Shattenkirk

The 2024-25 NHL season is around the corner and there's still several veteran free-agents looking for work next season including right-handed defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

Shattenkirk, 35, spent last season as a Boston Bruin, appearing in 61 games, scoring six goals and ending the season with 24 points. While there's certainly some defensive flaws to his game, Shattenkirk is an elite offensive mind who can still help produce with some power-play minutes.

Here's three teams who may add Shattenkirk to their training camp rosters which open in a couple of weeks:

Edmonton Oilers

There's been some rumblings the Oilers are going to bring in several vets to training camp to fight for positions as their blue line is awfully thin. The team traded Cody Ceci and lost Philip Broberg to the Blues via offer sheet, so new GM Stan Bowman has some in-season flexibility financially to add, but the thing is the Oilers don't have enough depth to start the season. Shattenkirk would be fun to watch playing shotgun to Evan Bouchard on PP1 or could find himself as the QB on PP2.

Calgary Flames

The Flames are also in the market for defenseman, and Shattenkirk is likely someone they'd be interested in a PTO for camp. At 35, it will be interesting to see what type of team he lands with as the Flames aren't going to sniff the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season. There's a chance to play significant minutes though, so he'll have a tough decision to make if GM Craig Conroy comes calling.

Ottawa Senators

It's an all-Canadian trio as the Senators round out option three. They have some spots to win on the right-side of their blueline. Shattenkirk would give them a nice balance on their back end and someone who can help transform their power-play. 210 power-play points in 952 career NHL games, Shattenkirk has the kind of experience Ottawa craves.
