3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Calen Addison
The 2024-25 NHL season is just around the corner and several free agents are looking for work for next year. Right-handed defenseman Calen Addison is one and while Tyson Barrie recently signed a PTO, Addison has yet to receive any type of commitment for next season.
Addison, 24, was originally a 2018 second-round of the Pittsburgh Penguins and was moved to the Minnesota Wild where he made his NHL debut in 2020-21. Addison spent parts of four seasons in Minny before being joining the San Jose Sharks for 60 games last season in which he scored one goal and ended the year with 12 points in 60 games.
Here's three potential destinations for the Brandon, MB native:
Winnipeg Jets
The Jets are looking to have several of their young players take giant steps and that includes on the back end with the likes of Logan Stanley and Dylan Samberg. Winnipeg had some turnover on their blueline and there could be an opening for another righty option for the 7/8 spot. The Jets know Addison pretty well so don't be surprised to see him land in Winnipeg for camp.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Right now Conor Timmins and Topi Niemela are the two right-handed depth options for the Leafs as Chris Tanev and Timothy Liljegren are locks and Jack McCabe will once again play his off side. Addison isn't necessarily someone Craig Berube and Brad Treliving drool over, considering he's only 5-foot-11, but he is someone who can move the puck and push the offense. Unlikely a pair, but considering the Leafs lack of depth, could be an option.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are in the market for righties and will certainly be bringing in at least one for training camp. Addison is still young enough and with a reasonably high ceiling, that landing himself in a situation like Edmonton, where he could help out on the second power-play unit could really propel his career. Expect to hear the Oilers announce a couple of PTO's in the coming days, and Addison could be involved.
