Analyst Thinks Arber Xhekaj Could Be "Inspiration" For Canadiens' Rookies

Stu Cowan of The Montreal Gazette believes that Arber Xhekaj’s journey from being undrafted to becoming a key player for the Montreal Canadiens could be a big source of inspiration for the team’s rookies.

Xhekaj’s story is unique in that he was passed over in both the OHL and NHL drafts, spending time working at Costco and training on his own during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, he was invited to the Canadiens' rookie camp and seized the opportunity, showcasing determination that ultimately earned him a spot on the NHL roster.

That ultimately culminated in a two-year, $2.6 million contract, a pretty cool outcome given his background story.

Xhekaj’s rise to the NHL is particularly remarkable given that he was the only undrafted player from the Canadiens' 2021 rookie camp to make it to the NHL, alongside six other drafted players. Despite facing nerves during his first preseason game, he boldly asked for another chance to prove himself, impressing the coaching staff and management.

His ability to push through adversity and take advantage of every opportunity embodies a mindset that Cowan believes rookies should adopt—one of self-belief and persistence.

Cowan emphasizes that Xhekaj’s example can motivate the next generation of Canadiens to pursue their goals relentlessly, knowing that even the most untraditional paths can lead to the NHL.
