Detroit Red Wings Re-Sign Jonatan Berggren

The Detroit Red Wings have made a notable move, as they have re-signed forward Jonatan Berggren to a one-year, $825,000 contract.

Berggren, 24, was one of the Red Wings' remaining restricted free agents. However, they have now gotten him signed before the start of training camp. His goal from here will be to impress the Red Wings in hopes of landing a spot on their opening night.

Berggren spent the majority of this past season down in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he had 24 goals to go along with 56 points in 53 games. Overall, the 2018 second-round pick had a strong season down in the AHL, and it should help him receive plenty of consideration for an NHL job next season.

Berggren also appeared in 12 games this past season with the Red Wings, where he had two goals and six points. Overall, while he did not receive the most chances in the NHL last year, he was still pretty solid. This was after he had 15 goals and 28 points in 67 contests during the 2022-23 with the Red Wings.

Overall, this is a no-risk move for the Red Wings. The cap hit for Berggren is quite low, and it will be fun to see if this is the year where the promising forward breaks out.
