Former Canadiens Defenseman Chris Wideman Retires From NHL

Chris Wideman has retired from the NHL at 34 years old after playing six seasons in the NHL. He was a member of the Montreal Canadiens' organization for the past three seasons.

Wideman didn't play last season, but suited up for 110 games in the prior two seasons combined for Montreal. His 2021-22 season was the most impressive as the veteran d-man scored four goals and 27 points in 64 games. It was also the only season in his career where he averaged over 14 minutes per game of ice time.

Wideman finishes his career having played for four NHL teams including the Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers, and Florida Panthers. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 draft by the Senators.

The defenseman finishes his career with 20 goals and 78 points in 291 games to go along with 246 hits, 271 blocked shots, and 252 penalty minutes. He suited up for Team USA at the World Championship twice and put up big numbers in the KHL in 2020-21 for one season.

Wideman says he doesn't know how he'll stay close to hockey, but as with everything else in his career, he'll find a way to do so.
