Islanders Rumors: Brock Nelson Top Candidate On Projected Trade Block This Season

Brock Nelson has emerged as the top candidate on Bleacher Report's Lyle Richardson's projected trade block board for the upcoming NHL season.

The 33-year-old center, who has been a reliable fixture in the New York Islanders' lineup for over a decade, is entering the final year of his six-year contract with a $6 million cap hit.

Nelson is a consistent producer, including a career-high 75 points in the 2022-23 season, proving his value as a top-six forward, making him a highly attractive forward as he approaches unrestricted free agency next July.

With an aging roster and a shallow prospect pool, the team finds itself in a precarious position—struggling to remain competitive while lacking the resources for a full rebuild.

Nelson's contract situation epitomizes this dilemma. Although his consistent scoring has been crucial to the Islanders' offense, Lamoriello may need to consider trading Nelson if the team's playoff hopes dwindle as the season progresses.

Such a move could provide the Islanders with valuable assets and much-needed cap space, particularly with young defenseman Noah Dobson due for an extension.

Over the past five seasons, the 32-year-old has recorded 151 goals and 139 assists for 290 total points across 360 games played.

While the odds of Nelson being traded before the season begins are slim, his name is likely to circulate in trade rumors as the deadline approaches, especially if the Islanders falter in the standings.

Moving Nelson could help the Islanders avoid losing him for nothing in free agency and potentially kickstart a necessary roster overhaul.
