Jets & Cole Perfetti Contract Talks: "“The Politest In Recent Memory”

Insider Elliotte Friedman recently noted how contract negotiations between the Winnipeg Jets and restricted free agent Cole Perfetti have been among the "polittest in recent memory," according to several league executives.

Despite Perfetti being the Jets' last unsigned RFA with training camp looming, both sides have maintained a calm, amicable approach.

The 22-year-old forward has continued to participate in team activities, notably representing the Jets at the NHL/NHLPA media tour and attending a charity fishing event, which is unusual for an unsigned player.

This ongoing involvement reinforces Perfetti's commitment to staying in Winnipeg, with the young star reaffirming that he is "not unhappy with the Jets and wants to stay."

The holdup in negotiations appears to be over salary rather than contract length, with financial comparisons likely playing a role.

Friedman pointed to Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto's recent $3.75 million AAV bridge deal as a potential sticking point.

Both Pinto and Perfetti have posted similar career numbers, and it’s believed that Perfetti’s camp may be seeking a deal in the same range. However, the Jets, mindful of their cap situation, may be hesitant to match those terms, adding to the delay.

Despite the ongoing talks, there’s no sense of tension between Perfetti and the team.

Both sides have shown a strong commitment to reaching a fair agreement before the 2024-25 season begins.

Perfetti is coming off his best offensive season yet, recording 19 goals and 19 assists in 71 games, and is expected to have a breakout year once the deal is finalized.
