Maple Leafs Nick Robertson: I'm Happy To Be In Toronto"

Nick Robertson recently expressed contentment with remaining a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs, stating, "I'm happy to be in Toronto," as he rejoined the team for training camp.

This marks a big shift from earlier in the offseason, when reports surfaced that the 23-year-old forward had requested a trade and had no plans to re-sign.

Despite those frustrations, including inconsistent playing time and a brief stint with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, Robertson ultimately agreed to a one-year, $875,000 contract in early September.

While he declined to elaborate on his previous desire to leave, Robertson emphasized his excitement about the upcoming season, saying, "I signed in Toronto. I'm happy to be back. Being here a week ago, it’s good to see everyone."

Robertson's change in tone may suggest a renewed openness to staying with the Leafs.

The winger enters camp with a fresh opportunity, starting on a line with John Tavares and Bobby McMann, and head coach Craig Berube has been vocal about his confidence in Robertson's potential.

Over the summer, Berube reached out to assure him of a bigger role with the team. "With your ability and speed, you'd be a good addition to our team," Berube remarked.

Robertson, who trained extensively alongside his brother Jason Robertson and other NHL players during the offseason, has embraced the chance to prove himself, noting, "I had a great summer... my conditioning feels good, my body feels good, and I’m looking forward to this camp."

While the trade request still lingers in the background, Robertson appears focused on making the most of his opportunity with the Leafs. His flexibility, including the ability to play both wings, could help him secure a more consistent role in the top nine.

As training camp progresses, Robertson is taking things one step at a time, stating, "I’ve got to come in, work hard, and build on what I had last year."

Whether his desire to stay in Toronto is permanent remains to be seen, but for now, Robertson is happy to be part of the team.
