Maple Leafs Rumors: Analyst Says Nick Robertson Should Drop Trade Request

Analyst James Mirtle of The Athletic believes that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson should reconsider and drop his recent trade request, as he is on the cusp of a breakout season with the team.

Despite Robertson's frustrations over his limited NHL experience, with just 87 games played since being drafted in the second round in 2019, Mirtle argues that the timing is perfect for the young winger to seize a larger role in Toronto.

With Tyler Bertuzzi's departure and the team's decision to allocate most of their cap space to bolster the defense, a significant opportunity has emerged for Robertson to secure a top-six role on the left wing, particularly with Matthew Knies likely taking one of those spots.

Mirtle emphasizes that Robertson's desire for more playing time is now more attainable than ever within the Leafs organization.

The team has a glaring need at left wing, and Robertson could easily fit into a key position, potentially even earning significant power play time.

Last season, despite limited minutes, Robertson produced at a 40-point pace, and with the current roster dynamics, he could significantly improve those numbers.

Mirtle believes that instead of pushing for a trade, Robertson should focus on capitalizing on the opportunities available with the Leafs, where he is poised to play a more substantial role.

Last season, the 22-year-old recorded 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 total points across 56 games played.

Ultimately, Mirtle asserts that it is in Robertson's best interest to sign with the Leafs, report to training camp, and prove his capabilities.

A strong showing this season could not only enhance his role within the team but also increase his value in future contract negotiations or trade scenarios.
