NHL Rumors: James van Riemsdyk to Land PTO for 2024-25 Season

With the new season just around the corner, several veteran free agents are getting closer to making a decision on a new team. Winger James van Riemsdyk has been waiting all summer long for a contract offer and look for the veteran forward to sign a PTO in the next week or so as training camps are kicking off.

JVR spent last season with the Boston Bruins, he scored 11 goals and 38 points in 71 games and another five points in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games. With over 1000 games of NHL experience, JVR can be a solid pickup for a team's depth scoring and provide a net-front presence on the power play.

Here's three teams to keep an eye on:

Carolina Hurricanes

The 'Canes are dealing with some significant injuries up front as Jesper Fast is done for the season. They have a few prospects who will battle for spots come training camp, however don't be surprised to see management sign a couple of veterans to ramp up the internal competition among their top-nine forwards. JVR fits the bill.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils are also looking for depth up front and while GM Tom Fitzgerald spent most of the offseason revamping his roster and taking away all the 'vanilla', he also knows the team has had issues with secondary scoring and JVR could be a solid veteran addition. He's from the area and as his career winds down, could be interested in playing for the Devils before he retires.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Don't count out a reunion here as the Maple Leafs are rather thin on left wing. If Easton Cowan isn't ready for an NHL job and Nick Robertson gets dealt, JVR could step in on either the second or third line and be used on the team's second power play. He knows what to expect when it comes to the media circus, and it would be fitting to see him have success in Toronto after his original tenure didn't go as planned.
