NHL Rumors: Kris Letang Addresses Rumored Trade Request To Montreal

Kris Letang has firmly dismissed rumors suggesting he requested a trade to the Montreal Canadiens, putting an end to speculation that surfaced over the summer.

The rumors, which gained traction in August after Pittsburgh journalist Mark Madden claimed on a podcast that Letang was seeking a move to his hometown team, were quickly refuted by the veteran defenseman.

"People were talking about that? They weren’t talking to me!" Letang quipped during a recent media session, making it clear that no such discussions had ever taken place.

Despite his ties to Montreal and the arrival of his former agent Kent Hughes as the Canadiens' general manager, Letang emphasized his contentment with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He acknowledged the frustration of missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season but remains focused on helping the team rebound.

"Yes, it was frustrating for everyone that we couldn’t get it together throughout the year... but I didn’t request a trade," Letang said, adding that he’s optimistic about the changes the Penguins made in the offseason.

Letang, who is under contract with Pittsburgh through 2028 with a $6.1 million cap hit, reiterated his commitment to the franchise where he’s spent his entire 17-year NHL career.

Reflecting on last season’s struggles, he said, "At the end of the day, we were 24 hours away from a playoff spot."

With 51 points in 82 games last season, Letang continues to be a key figure on the Penguins' blue line and remains confident the team can bounce back in the upcoming season.
