NHL Rumors: Speculation Mike Hoffman Has Played His Final NHL Game

Steve Warne of The Hockey News speculates that veteran winger Mike Hoffman may have played his final NHL game.

Once a top offensive force, Hoffman was a key contributor during the Ottawa Senators' 2017 playoff run and later posted a career-best 70-point season with the Florida Panthers in 2018-19.

Possessing speed, an elite shot, and power play prowess, Hoffman was among the league's more dangerous scorers. However, as the 34-year-old remains unsigned heading into the 2024-25 season, his future in the NHL looks increasingly uncertain.

In recent years, Hoffman's production has steadily declined due to injuries, including a concussion late in the 2023-24 season, and reduced effectiveness in his offensive game.

His time with rebuilding teams like the Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks saw his offensive numbers dwindle, and his defensive shortcomings became more glaring.

Without the power-play impact that once defined his game, teams have been less inclined to overlook his weaknesses.

As a result, Hoffman has struggled to secure a professional tryout or contract for the upcoming season, a stark contrast to the player who once ranked among the NHL's most reliable scorers.

Despite earning an estimated $43.5 million over his career and ranking 20th in all-time scoring for the Senators, Hoffman's recent struggles raise doubts about his future in the league.

With no offers materializing, Warne suggests that Hoffman's time in the NHL may be nearing its end, unless a last-minute opportunity arises.
