Oilers Rumors: Analyst Links Travis Dermott & 2 More Defensemen To Edmonton

Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal has linked the Edmonton Oilers to several veteran defensemen as they look to bolster their blue line ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Among the names mentioned are former Oiler Justin Schultz, right-shot defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, and blueliner Travis Dermott.

While Schultz has reportedly been in talks with the team, Leavins notes that the 34-year-old may be seeking a full contract rather than a professional tryout offer, which could complicate a potential reunion.

Shattenkirk, another experienced option, has also been connected to the Oilers, but his price tag may push the team to explore more affordable alternatives.

Leavins emphasizes that a cost-effective solution may be found in Travis Dermott, who spent last season with the Arizona Coyotes on a two-way deal.

Dermott, 27, is a left-shot defenseman but is capable of playing on both sides of the ice, offering the versatility the Oilers need.

His ties to Edmonton's organization run deep, as he was coached by head coach Kris Knoblauch during his junior hockey days and was previously represented by Oilers' CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson.

These connections, along with his steady play last season—logging over 17 minutes per game—make him a viable option for the Oilers' defensive depth.
