Penguins Rumors: Joel Blomqvist Could Attract Plenty Of Trade Interest

Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now recently speculated that Pittsburgh Penguins goaltending prospect Joel Blomqvist could attract trade interest from teams seeking depth in net.

With Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic locked in at the NHL level and Russian prospect Sergei Murashov arriving in the system, Blomqvist finds himself in a crowded goalie pipeline.

Despite the Penguins' preference to develop Blomqvist further in the AHL, teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, and Buffalo Sabres—each in need of goaltending reinforcements—could view the 22-year-old as a valuable asset.

Blomqvist is coming off an impressive 2023-24 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he posted a 25-12-6 record, a .921 save percentage, and a 2.16 goals-against average, earning AHL All-Star honors.

His standout play has positioned him as a potential future NHL starter, though his path to the big league is currently blocked by multi-year contracts for Jarry and Nedeljkovic.

While Pittsburgh has no immediate pressure to rush Blomqvist to the NHL, his value as a trade chip could rise, especially if other teams offer enticing assets in return, Kingerski notes.

Kingerski suggested that Blomqvist’s rising stock might prompt rival general managers to inquire about his availability, particularly if the Penguins need to address other areas of their roster.

If Blomqvist continues to develop as expected, he could either emerge as Pittsburgh’s long-term solution in net or become a key piece in a trade that helps the team strengthen elsewhere.
