Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Sidney Crosby to Extension

The Pittsburgh Penguins are keeping their franchise legend around, as they have signed Sidney Crosby to a two-year contract extension. In fitting fashion, the average annual value of Crosby's new deal is $8.7 million, just like his current contract.

There were multiple reports that the Penguins and Crosby were making serious progress on an extension. Now, it has come to fruition, and Crosby will stick around with the Penguins as they look to get back to being a playoff team.

Crosby, 37, is still one of the NHL's best players this late into his career, and he is not showing any signs of slowing down. In 82 games this past season with the Pens, the 2005 first-overall pick had 42 goals, 52 assists, and 94 points. With numbers like these, it is rather apparent that he is still a dominant player, so this extension is massive for the Penguins as they look to become contenders again.

By signing Crosby to a contract extension, the Penguins will now look to make other moves to improve their roster. It is no secret that Crosby wants to win again, so it will be very fun to see what happens on that front from here.

In 1,272 career NHL games, Crosby has 592 goals, 1,004 assists, 1,596 points, and a plus-217 rating. It will be fun to see how much he builds upon these stats by the end of his contract extension from here.
