Analyst: Cayden Primeau Won't Last The Season With Canadiens

While Cayden Primeau is set to back up starting goaltender Samuel Montembeault for the Montreal Canadiens in the 2024-25 season, one analyst and former National Hockey League goalie doesn't think that arrangement will last.

TVA Sports analyst Eric Fichaud has predicted that Primeau won't be the backup all season. With the Habs hoping to make some strides up the standings this year, Fichaud believes that they need more experience to tandem up with Montembeault.

I think you should have a much older guy to support Samuel [Montembeault], if Samuel is your trusted man.

I am convinced that Primeau will not finish the year in Montreal.

The Canadiens spent most of last season with a three-goalie system, which limited Primeau to just 21 starts. The 25-year-old certainly fared well in those opportunities, however, posting a 2.99 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage.

The veteran Jake Allen, who was the "experienced" backstop on hand, was dealt at the trade deadline to the New Jersey Devils, where he now backs up Jacob Markstrom.

It would be surprising if the Canadiens lack confidence in Primeau as Fichaud appears to, as they made a point of not exposing the youngster to waivers last season, and he rewarded them with that fine performance.

Montembeault will be the main man between the pipes again this season, though, after the soon-to-be 28-year-old started 40 games for Montreal last year, posting a .903 Sv% and a 3.14 GAA.
