Report: Tony DeAngelo Turned Down For A PTO By Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers are a team that's looking for some depth on defense, after losing Philip Broberg to an offer sheet and Cody Ceci in a trade this offseason. And a right-shot D would really come in handy. But when unrestricted free agent d-man Tony DeAngelo came looking to score a PTO (professional tryout) from the team, they simply said, in effect, 'thanks, but no thanks.'
That's the word from insider Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal.
We all know that DeAngelo has had his share of controversies over the course of his career, but whether that was the reason for the Oilers' lack of interest is unknown. It also could have been the fact that he had a dreadful 2023-24 season with the Carolina Hurricanes, managing just 3 goals and 11 points, while playing just 31 games and suffering a slew of healthy scratches.
It was only two years prior, in his previous go-round with the Hurricanes, that DeAngelo posted a 51-point season with a plus/minus rating of +30. But a difficult year getting along in Philadelphia with the Flyers followed, leading up to last year's debacle.
The distaste for the 28-year-old around the NHL has even reached a point to where he was rumored to be jumping to the KHL in Russia for this season. There has not been any official word of that signing as of yet.
DeAngelo's past troublesome behavior has been well-documented.
And as for the Oilers, they're instead looking potentially at the likes of Kevin Shattenkirk or Justin Schultz for some added depth on the blueline for training camp.
