Ryan Johansen & NHLPA File Grievance Against Flyers

In August, the Philadelphia Flyers made the decision to terminate forward Ryan Johansen's contract due to a "material breach." The player's agent immediately stated his disappointment in the move and now the NHLPA and Johansen have officially filed a grievance against the Flyers in an attempt to overturn the contract termination.

Johansen was acquired by the Flyers at the trade deadline in the Sean Walker trade, and despite having played in all 63 games for the Colorado Avalanche, including a contest just two days earlier, he reported to Philly claiming he was unable to play due to an injury either for the Flyers or their AHL affiliate.

After the contract termination last month, his agent Kurt Overhardt said "Ryan Johansen has a severe hockey injury that requires extensive surgery which has been scheduled.

"Since being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, Ryan has worked in good faith with the Club, its medical staff, and authorized third-party physicians.

"The Flyers' attempt to terminate Ryan's contract is disappointing".

Insider Elliotte Friedman, however, reported days later that "the Flyers wouldn’t pursue this without a behind-the-scenes wink from the NHL."

The 32-year-old Johansen had recorded 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points in his 63 games for the Avalanche, playing an average of 13:39 per night.

For his career, he has 202 goals and 376 assists for 578 points in 905 games over 13 seasons.
