Sabres Rumors: Will Buffalo Pursue Another Top-Six Forward?

Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic has speculated that the Buffalo Sabres could still be in the market for a top-six forward, especially as they look to replace the production lost with Jeff Skinner’s departure.

While the Sabres have the cap space and prospect depth to facilitate a major acquisition, Fairburn suggests any significant move might not happen until later in the season, closer to the trade deadline.

One name that stands out as a potential target is Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers, who is entering the final year of his contract. If the Jets falter in their playoff push, Ehlers could become available, presenting an intriguing option for Buffalo.

At 28, Ehlers would be a strong fit for the Sabres’ fast-paced, transition-heavy style.

He could solidify Buffalo's offense while also allowing younger players like JJ Peterka, Jason Zucker, and Zach Benson to slot into more comfortable roles further down the lineup.

Although Ehlers is expected to command a cap hit north of $6 million in his next contract, Buffalo’s current cap flexibility makes this a feasible move.

However, the winger’s 10-team no-trade list could be an obstacle in any potential negotiations.

Ultimately, Fairburn notes that Buffalo’s pursuit of a top-six forward will depend on how their season unfolds and where they stand in the playoff race as the trade deadline approaches.

The Jets’ position will also play a crucial role in determining Ehlers' availability.

While some frustration exists among fans over Buffalo’s relatively conservative use of cap space compared to more aggressive teams, such as the Vegas Golden Knights, the Sabres may be waiting for the right moment to strike and strengthen their lineup for a playoff push.
