Washington Capitals Get Brutal News On T.J. Oshie

Washington Capitals' veteran winger T.J. Oshie is expected to miss the entire 2024-25 NHL season after being placed on long-term injured reserve due to chronic back problems.

The 37-year-old has dealt with recurring back issues for several years, limiting him to just 52 games last season and fewer than 60 games in each of the past three.

After his medical evaluation at the start of training camp, both Oshie and the Capitals determined that stepping away from the game was necessary.

“The last season was challenging for me, my family, and my teammates as I dealt with a chronic back injury,” Oshie said. “I remain committed to the process and am working and doing my best to regain total health.”

Oshie, who is in the final year of his eight-year contract, has been a key figure for the Capitals since joining the team in 2015, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Despite his desire to return to the ice, his future remains uncertain. “I’d love to play next year, but I will need to come back with somewhat of a guarantee that my back won’t be [in the way],” he said earlier this year, acknowledging the difficulty of continuing his career with this persistent injury.

With both Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom placed on long-term injured reserve, the Capitals will receive nearly $15 million in salary cap relief.

General manager Chris Patrick emphasized the organization’s support for Oshie, saying, “T.J. is a vital member of our team and continues to be an indispensable part of our leadership group. We fully back him as he works through these health challenges.”
