Analyst Proposes Trade Blue Jackets & Penguins Should Make
With nearly identical cap hits—Merzlikins at $5.4 million through 2026-27 and Jarry at $5.375 million through 2027-28—Portzline believes this "bad contract for bad contract" deal could offer both netminders a much-needed change of scenery.
“This kind of move isn't uncommon in the NHL,” Portzline noted, suggesting that a fresh start could help the goalies rediscover their form after inconsistent performances.
Tristan Jarry is a healthy scratch tonight for #LetsGoPens for the 2nd game in a row.

His last appearance was on Oct. 16 vs BUF, where he allowed 3 goals on 5 shots in just 11:33 TOI.
The logic behind the proposal stems from both teams' pressing need for stability in net.
Merzlikins hasn't posted a save percentage above .900 since the 2021-22 season, while Jarry has been pulled from three of his last six home starts.
Portzline argues that the trade could provide some cap flexibility: Columbus would gain relief from Merzlikins' extra year of term, while Pittsburgh could reduce potential buyout costs for Jarry.
However, he acknowledged potential hurdles, such as each goalie’s modified no-trade clause—Merzlikins has a 10-team list, while Jarry has a 12-team list—which could complicate negotiations.
Now hearing #CBJ has sent G Jet Greaves to Cleveland. A good sign Elvis Merzlikins is ready to return.

While Portzline emphasized that this proposal is purely speculative, with no active trade discussions reported, he believes it’s a creative solution worth considering for two clubs in need of fresh starts in the crease.
“It’s just something to ponder,” he concluded, pointing out that even if it might not completely solve the goaltending woes, it could help each team move past a glaring weakness.
