Canadiens Rumors: Montreal Looking For Long-Term Upgrades To Roster

The Montreal Canadiens are taking a measured approach in addressing their roster needs, looking to focus on long-term upgrades rather than quick fixes, according to Marco D’Amico of RG.org

Despite some tough early-season injuries to key players like Patrick Laine, who is sidelined for 2-3 months, and defenseman David Reinbacher, out for 5-6 months, the organization is not rushing into the trade market for short-term solutions.

As a source within the team stated, "The Canadiens want to bank on their youth to keep them afloat and help push for a playoff spot. Don’t expect a rush or panic trade, it’s not coming."

Instead, the Canadiens are looking inward, giving promising young players like Oliver Kapanen and Joshua Roy opportunities to step up.

Kapanen, who impressed during preseason, may remain on the roster despite his contract with Timra IK in Sweden, while Roy is poised to take on a larger role in the top six, potentially replacing Laine.

Management sees these young players as very important to the team's current success and long-term growth. "Roy’s elite Hockey IQ and vision make him a natural fit for more responsibility," D'Amico noted, signaling the team's confidence in internal development.

GM Kent Hughes is open to making some big moves but remains committed to ensuring any acquisitions align with the team's long-term vision.

With two first-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft and a young core featuring players like Juraj Slafkovský, the Canadiens are well-positioned to remain competitive and continue to build a deep roster, relying on both veteran additions and the emergence of homegrown talent.
