Canadiens Rumors: Two Enforcers Linked To Montreal In Trade Rumors

The Montreal Canadiens have been linked to trade rumors involving two potential enforcers, as they aim to alleviate the physical burden currently shouldered by defenseman Arber Xhekaj, as noted by David Calabretta of The Fourth Period

With Xhekaj playing a central role in the team’s toughness, Calabretta thinks the Canadiens could explore adding a bottom-six forward who can provide physicality and protection for their younger, skilled players.

Two names that have surfaced are Columbus Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier and Philadelphia Flyers veteran Nicolas Deslauriers.

Olivier, 27, is entering the final year of his contract with the Blue Jackets and has established himself as a reliable fourth-line player known for his gritty, physical style.

Last season, he appeared in 58 games, logged eight fights, and contributed to the penalty kill, making him a potential fit for the Canadiens' need for a tough, defensively responsible forward.

Deslauriers, 33, a former Canadien and fan favorite, signed a four-year extension with the Flyers in 2022. Although acquiring him could prove challenging due to his contract, his familiarity with Montreal and reputation as a reliable enforcer make him an intriguing option.

As GM Kent Hughes evaluates Montreal’s roster over the first few games, adding a player like Olivier or Deslauriers could provide much-needed relief for Xhekaj, allowing the young defenseman to focus on his development without being relied upon for all of the team’s physical responsibilities.

“Hughes should do his due diligence on the trade market,” Calabretta noted, suggesting that bringing in one of these enforcers would not only boost Montreal’s toughness but also help protect their younger talent as they continue to grow.
