Canadiens "Upset" With Playing Time Of 1st-Round Pick Ivan Demidov

The Montreal Canadiens are planning a trip to Russia to monitor Ivan Demidov, the team’s fifth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, amid growing concerns over his limited ice time with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL.

General Manager Kent Hughes is expected to lead the visit, which has been in the works since the summer but has taken on increased urgency due to Demidov’s inconsistent usage.

“The Canadiens’ fans have been pretty disappointed this year with the playing time of their fifth overall draft pick,” noted Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

Demidov has recorded 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in 17 games but has often been relegated to the third line or lower, particularly when Evgeny Kuznetsov was sidelined.

Head coach Roman Rotenberg has been strict about Demidov’s minutes, reportedly reducing them for minor mistakes, leading to frustration among Montreal's management and fanbase.

The Canadiens are concerned that this approach could slow Demidov’s development and readiness for the NHL, prompting Hughes and his staff to go evaluate the situation in person.

The Canadiens are hopeful that the visit will clarify his timeline and improve communication with SKA regarding his usage.

While it is unclear if Hughes will directly address Demidov’s current role with Rotenberg, the trip is viewed as necessary in ensuring Demidov’s progression and facilitating a smoother transition to North America.
