Insider: Dallas Expected To Offer Huge Number to Wyatt Johnston on Extension

Now that they've locked up goaltender Jake Oettinger for eight years, the Dallas Stars are apparently turning their attention to another core young star, as insider Elliotte Friedman tells us that Wyatt Johnston should be next. And he has a pretty good idea of what they'll be offering him.

I would bet now that Dallas gets started on Wyatt Johnston... If you look at it, their young core, (Miro) Heiskanen is in the '8s' ($8.45M AAV), (Roope) Hintz is in the 8s ($8.45M AAV), Oettinger's in the 8s ($8.25M). You have to look at it, and believe they say to Wyatt Johnston, 'If you want term, what do you think about the number '8-ish'?

After back-to-back Conference Finals, the Stars are hoping to go one step further with this young core linked up with the Jamie Benn/Tyler Seguin 'veteran core'.

And after going from 24 goals to 32 goals in his sensational first two seasons in the NHL, Johnston continues to amaze. Witness this shootout game-winner:

He already has five points in five games this season with a plus/minus rating of +3.

Stars GM Jim Nill admits he is in talks with Johnston’s agent but, he added that they’re "playing it by ear for now", per Dallas News reporter Lia Assimakopoulos
