Insider: Jake McCabe & Maple Leafs Extension Talk Numbers Revealed

In a season and a half, Jake McCabe has made himself indispensable on the Toronto Maple Leafs blueline. So much so, that according to insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, the team is working on a six-year extension for the impending unrestricted free agent.

Kypreos expects the deal to fall in the $5 million AAV range, or just north of that at $5.2M.

McCabe, turning 31 next week, has brought his heavy, physical game to the Leafs blueline and is a rock in their top four. Last season, his first full year in the Blue & White, he recorded career highs in goals (8), assists (20) and points (28), as well as plus/minus rating (+20) and hits handed out (219). He also blocked 129 shots. Does just about everything you want a defenseman to do.

He's definitely new head coach Craig Berube's kind of guy, and GM Brad Treliving is working on keeping McCabe in T.O. for the long haul.

"They're really not that far apart," reports insider Darren Dreger on TSN. "He's most definitely interested in getting something done sooner than later.

He's going into the final season of a 4-year, $4 million AAV deal.
