Islanders Rumors: Pierre Engvall Could Be "Great Trade Target" For Metropolitan Team

According to Jonathan Bailey of Philly Hockey Now, New York Islanders winger Pierre Engvall could be a "great trade target" for the Philadelphia Flyers despite being demoted to the AHL after clearing waivers.

Engvall, a 6-foot-5 winger with impressive speed and puck possession numbers, could thrive under Flyers head coach John Tortorella, who has a track record of getting the best out of players like Owen Tippett through a more physical, forechecking-heavy style.

Bailey believes Engvall’s size and speed, combined with his strong defensive metrics, could provide a boost to the Flyers' bottom-six forward group, which currently lacks physicality and size.

Engvall, 28, is in the second year of a seven-year, $21 million contract, and while his offensive production has been inconsistent, his underlying analytics tell a different story.

He boasts a wins-above-replacement (WAR) value of 74% over the past three seasons, excelling in both even-strength offense (90%) and defense (92%).

Bailey calls Engvall an "analytics darling" and suggests his potential impact on the Flyers would be significant, helping to balance their smaller, lighter roster.

Tortorella’s system could be the key to unlocking more from the Swedish winger, with his ability to elevate teammates and improve both ends of the ice making him a low-risk, high-reward addition.

While the Flyers passed on claiming Engvall off waivers, Bailey argues that trading for him now would allow them to bypass future waiver risks.

A potential deal could also see the Islanders retaining some salary to make the move more cap-friendly for the Flyers.

In return, Bailey suggests the Flyers might trade pending RFA Noah Cates, and potentially even secure a draft pick or two, as the Islanders would likely be eager to shed Engvall’s contract.
