Islanders Rumors: Replacement Options For New York To Replace Anthony Duclair

The New York Islanders are weighing their options after Anthony Duclair was sidelined indefinitely with a leg injury sustained against Montreal.

As noted by Arthur Staple of The Athletic, Duclair’s absence leaves a big void on the top line alongside Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal, where his speed and scoring were expected to be critical.

With limited internal options, the Islanders have tried Simon Holmström in Duclair’s spot and may call up Hudson Fasching, but Staple notes that “neither brings Duclair's offensive upside,” making them temporary fixes rather than long-term solutions.

GM Lou Lamoriello faces a tough decision: stick with internal replacements or explore the trade market.

While Duclair’s $3.5 million cap hit could be utilized through long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to create temporary cap space, Staple points out that “a trade without money going out is unworkable at the moment,” given the complexity of reintegrating Duclair’s cap hit if he returns mid-season.

Staple emphasizes that Lamoriello may be forced to act creatively if internal options falter.

“The Isles need a quick fix,” he writes, “but with limited cap space and roster flexibility, Lamoriello might have to test internal solutions longer before committing to an external move.”

The Islanders’ strategy will depend on how well Holmström, Fasching, or even Anders Lee can fill Duclair’s role in the coming weeks.
