Maple Leafs Rumors: Toronto Could Place Two Players On LTIR

According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, the Toronto Maple Leafs are likely to place defenseman Jani Hakanpää and forward Conor Dewar on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to manage their early-season cap situation.

Both players have missed all of training camp due to injuries, with Hakanpää dealing with significant knee issues that make him a clear candidate for LTIR.

Dewar's injury timeline is less certain, but given his absence from camp, the Leafs are expected to "slow play his return."

Even with these moves, the Leafs would still be around $1.07 million over the cap.

Mirtle suggests that placing defenseman Conor Timmins on waivers to free up an additional $1.1 million could be the final step in getting the Leafs under the cap.

This move would allow the team to finalize contracts for key additions, including Max Pacioretty.

In the meantime, standout AHL defenseman Marshall Rifai could step into the lineup as the team's seventh defenseman, helping the Leafs navigate the early season without compromising depth.

While this strategy solves the immediate cap concerns, Mirtle points out that the situation is fluid, particularly with the potential return of Hakanpää and Dewar later in the season.

He notes that GM Brad Treliving may have "another, larger move in mind," possibly involving a trade of a higher-salary player like Calle Järnkrok or David Kämpf if depth options like Nick Robertson impress.
