NHL Rumors: Igor Shesterkin Linked To Surprising Team If He Hits Open Market
Shesterkin, 28, is expected to seek a record-breaking contract that could reset the market for NHL goalies. While the expectation is that he will re-sign with the Rangers and become the league’s highest-paid netminder, Parsons suggests that Calgary is positioned to make a serious offer if negotiations between Shesterkin and New York falter.
With over $35 million in projected cap space for next season, the Flames could offer a deal in the range of $13 million AAV to land the elite goaltender.

The Flames’ current goaltending situation is in flux, with Dan Vladar's contract set to expire and both Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley lacking NHL starting experience.
This uncertainty makes Calgary a potential dark horse in the race for Shesterkin, should he reach the open market. Parsons noted the impact such a move could have on the team's trajectory, writing, "Nothing would speed up a rebuild more than getting arguably the best goalie in the league."
Securing Shesterkin would not only fill a critical positional need but also show a strong commitment to building a competitive roster, which could help retain or attract star players.

However, while Calgary has the financial flexibility to compete in a potential bidding war, Shesterkin’s decision may depend on more than just the highest offer.
His preference for staying in the Eastern Conference or avoiding certain markets, like those in Canada, could be significant factors.
Despite this, Parsons notes, "it costs nothing for the team to show its interest," and for the Flames, even a long-shot attempt at landing Shesterkin could be a game-changing move.
Of course, this all depends on where negotiations between Shesterkin and the Rangers end up.
