NHL Rumors: Potential Frontrunners For Next Expansion Team
According to Pagnotta, U.S. cities like Atlanta and Houston are currently leading the race. Both cities offer significant advantages, as they rank among the top 10 media markets in the U.S., providing a strong base for corporate sponsorship and fan engagement.
"You’re talking about two top 10 media markets in the US," Pagnotta explained, pointing out that these factors give Atlanta and Houston a substantial edge in securing NHL teams.
While Quebec City remains a passionate hockey market, its smaller size and challenges with corporate support make it less of a priority for immediate expansion.
Despite the strong turnout at a recent preseason game between the Los Angeles Kings and Florida Panthers held in Quebec, Pagnotta suggested that the city's re-entry into the NHL could be delayed.
"It’s still a small market," he said, adding that while the fan base is enthusiastic, it may not be enough to overcome the financial challenges compared to larger U.S. cities.
Beyond these top contenders, Pagnotta mentioned that cities like Omaha, Oklahoma City, San Diego, and Portland have also shown interest in hosting NHL teams.
However, he noted that the immediate focus is on Atlanta and Houston, with the possibility of expansion to 34 teams being more realistic in the near future.
Quebec City may need to wait until the league considers further growth, potentially reaching 36 teams, to have a better shot at rejoining the NHL.
