NHL Trade Rumors: Besides Swayman, 4 Goalies Who Could Be Traded in '24-25
The 2024-25 NHL season is finally here after a very entertaining offseason. Lots of big names changed places and several intriguing trades were made throughout the summer months. Needless to say, everyone's very excited to get the new season started.
The trade deadline is once again set for early March and for this segment, let's dive into a way-too-early list of some goaltenders who could eventually be moved, without including Boston Bruins' netminder Jeremy Swayman:
Tristan Jarry, Pittsburgh Penguins
Jarry is under a microscope in Pittsburgh this season. He had a rough year in 2023-24, eventually losing his starting gig to Alex Nedeljkovic. GM Kyle Dubas brought back on a multi-year extension and the competition will once again be fierce for the Penguins' starter's crease. Jarry posted a 19-25-5 record last season, along with a .903 save percentage. If he's not able to get form and help the Pens make secure a playoff spot, he could be on the trade block. Jarry, 29, has four years left on his deal at $5.37 million AAV and owns a 12-team no-trade list.
Jordan Binnington, St Louis Blues
Binnington, 31 is getting pushed by Joel Hofer in St Louis and while last season he was given most of the team's starts, this season could be more of a tandem approach. Binnington went 28-21-5 last season, with a 2.84 GAA and .913 Sv.%, meanwhile Hofer, 24, went 15-12-1 with a .913 Sv.%. The Blues are looking to get back into the playoff picture in the west and if they struggle early, the trade chatter is going to pick up in a major way within their crease. Binnington has three years left on his deal, making $6 million AAV and owns an 18-team no-trade clause.
Marc-Andre Fleury, Minnesota Wild
This will be Fleury's last NHL season and if the Wild aren't in the hunt, GM Bill Guerin will leave it in the hands of 'The Flower', if he'll want one last shot at a Stanley Cup. While 1-A type starter's minutes are no longer an option for the veteran goaltender, he could certainly be a security blanket to a contending team's starting goalie. Fleury is set to earn $2.5 million in 2024-25.
Karel Vejmelka, Utah HC
Utah wants to win now and if they're going to do so, they'll need above average goaltending. Vejmelka lost the starting job to Connor Ingram last season, and that appears to once again, be the case entering this year. If Utah takes a swing at trading for Swayman, or someone else with Stanley Cup Playoff experience, look for Vejmelka to be involved in the deal. The southpaw netminder will be a free agent next summer and is owed $2.72 million. A very tradeable contract.
